A Downside To Taking Krill Oil

Krill oil is growing in popularity as more people are learning of it being harvested in cleaner water than the fish oil is. Krill is a crustacean that resembles shrimp and it lives in the coldest ocean water. They lack the pollutants that fish oil may contain such as mercury, lead or other pollutants. They are a great source of omega 3 an essential fatty acid for maintaining good health. Krill contains the same ingredients as fish oil, the EPA and the DHA.

The problem with taking Krill oil is that it is so good that we now have a concern that the supply of fresh Krill may dwindle. We aren’t the only mammals of the world that need the Krill. Whales and other ocean mammals eat Krill in their daily diet. If we start eating up their Krill, they will not have enough to eat.

I had thought about taking Krill, it seems like most types require you to take less doses than fish oil or flaxseed oil does. That sounded good to me, but at risk of me contributing to the starvation of whales, I will stick with my flaxseed oil gel tabs.

Flaxseed does give the same benefits as fish oil does. The form of omega 3 found in flaxseed is of the ALA type. Some people are unable to convert ALA into DHA and EPA. That is they type of omega 3 found in fish oil. If your body is unable to convert ALA into DHA and EPA, then you will need to take the fish oil gel tabs.

There was a study done a few years ago. A number of people were involved in the study. The result of the study was that taking omega 3 may decrease your chance of dieing from an inflammatory disease. The omega 3 used in this study was the plant type, ALA. Women who were taking the most omega 3 ALA were found to have a 44 percent less chance of dieing from inflammatory disease. It was found that the polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) were the most beneficial. While PUFA is found in both types of omega 3 fatty acids, they are most potent in the plant type ALA.

In conclusion, taking Krill may lessen the number of pills you take a day, it may be a cleaner less chance of taking pollutants into your body, but is it worth taking a risk of loosing our whale population. Then, taking an omega 3 fatty acid from a plant source, one that is abundant and can be replenished, may prove to be the best type you can take as it contains the most potent PUFA.
