Donna asks…
What nutrients are needsd to convert ALA to DHA and EPA?
I want to establish which nutrients are requires that the Omega-3 ALA can be converted to DHA & EPA.
admin answers:
You don’t need nutrients per se, you need two enzymes, delta-6-desaturase and elongase. If the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids in the diet is too high this will block the conversion of ALA to DHA and EPA through competion for these enzymes.

Mandy asks…
Iron and Omega 3 sources for vegetarian?
I want to turn vegetarian. I’m already anaemic. I’ve already started to eat some iron-rich food like dates and prunes. But I’m unsure of omega 3 sources. In the internet, the explanation is kinda complicated…’ALA omega‘ what nots!
What should I eat? Do tofu and soya stuff really help?
Advice from long-time vegetarian and medical practitioners perhaps.
Thanks!
admin answers:
In addition to flaxseed, omega 3′s are abundant in walnuts. A quarter cup or small handful contains about 94% of the daily recommended value. As for iron, soy, many beans and legumes (especially lentils), and seeds like sesame and pumpkin are rich in the mineral. I tend to get mine mostly from the latter (leafy greens like collards as well) as I follow a mostly raw vegan diet, but do what feels best for your body and try to eat as varied a diet as possible. Best of luck and vibrant health to you.

Lizzie asks…
Chinese Vegan Diet? What do you think?
Buddhist in China are Vegans including Shaolins.
Buddhist Chinese Diet is the most well planned Vegan diet. It contains all the essential amino acids from tofu and soy products. It also contains omega 3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA which they can get from seaweed consumtion. We can’t get these omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from fruits or vegetables. Some fruits, Seeds and Vegetables contains Omega 3 ALA which can be converted into EPA but the conversion rate is very low. And other says that seaweeds are good source of active vitamin B12. Beans sprouts which a staple food for Buddhist is also studied for its potential vitamin b12 content. Shiitake mushroom is the most important flavor enhancer of Buddhist Vegans because of its strong Umami or meat like taste. Shiitake mushrooms are good source of vitamin D which is not obtained from any fruits or vegetables.
Buddhist in China are Vegans including Shaolins. Shaolin kung Fu is practiced during Tang Dynasty(618-907) or earlier. Chinese only learn how to consume milk during the Mongol invasion of China(1271-1368). Chinese even non-vegetarians don’t recognize milk as food from ancient times to 13th century. Buddhist also don’t consume eggs.

It is very healthy. This is a very strict diet. I think it is wonderful. Also, it is not so much a diet, but a way of life.
Change your way of life.
I think it will make you feel GREAT.
As a vegetarian, I personally love seaweed.
Also I study Buddhism, and I believe they- among the Hindi, have the healthiest lifestyles around.
Though this diet is strict it leaves room for variety.
You can have allot of fun- and never eat the exact same thing twice in a week!!
I think it is a wonderful idea.
I believe traditional pious Asian cultures and sub-cultures are among the healthiest.
Shame on America, and all of our “BigMacs”!!!
